We are so thrilled to introduce our new trustee, Zipporah Kissi. We caught up with Zipporah to get to know a bit more about her role at Magic Breakfast…
Zipporah has over 20 years of experience of careers and youth development within the charity sector. She has been instrumental in steering strategic progression in empowering young people to recognise and release their leadership capabilities via community engagement. She is currently Head of Talent and Engagement for 20/20 Levels, which is dedicated to empowering Black and racially underrepresented young people through opportunities to maximise their potential in their careers and businesses.
How did you get introduced to Magic Breakfast? What drew you to the cause?
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! A saying that we all know too well, yet it is too often taken for granted. Magic Breakfast not only recognises that this is unfortunately not possible for everyone by providing breakfast directly to schools in the short term, as well as addressing how to end child morning hunger for good in the long-term. This two tier approach does what is says on the tin and I am here for it!
What’s your favourite part about being a trustee for Magic Breakfast?
As this is my first trustee position, the welcome and induction by the trustee board and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) has been exceptional. From individual meetings with trustees and the SLT, to weekly breakfast briefings, department meetings and governance training, I feel well looked after and informed on how to effectively deliver as a board member.
What challenges do you think organisations in this sector face?
Representation (the lack there of). ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, an Igbo proverb that to me means it takes us all (‘the village’) to provide safe, healthy environments and experiences where all children have the opportunity to fulfil their potential stigma free! This is sometimes difficult to actualise when some of those children do not see themselves represented.
What are you most looking forward to achieving whilst a trustee for Magic Breakfast?
As part of the People and Culture committee, I am looking forward to meeting staff who make the magic happen day to day. I would like to gain an understanding of the roles and departments at Magic Breakfast to be able to support with their development as they continue to ensure that each child gets the best start to achieve their potential – with a full stomach and a ready mind.
Finally, we have to ask…what’s your favourite breakfast?
It’s got to be Greek yogurt topped with berries, sunflower seeds and a drizzle of honey!
