Ahead of Labour’s pilot scheme for breakfast clubs in 750 schools, Real Britain visited a Magic Breakfast partner school which is already making a huge difference for children at Bournville Primary School in Weston-super-Mare.
“With 4.3 million children living in poverty according to Food Foundation figures, the clubs can’t come soon enough. Less than a mile from the much-loved bucket-and-spade beach at Weston Super Mare, Bournville is in one of the most deprived postcodes in Somerset, and the country. The ‘Magic Breakfast’ scheme has been running for eight years, meaning many kids in the school have always known breakfast here.”
At Magic Breakfast we have been campaigning for school breakfast for over 20 years. We see daily, in schools across England and Scotland the real, practical difference breakfast makes to young people’s lives in so many ways.
It’s encouraging to see that more people share this view, including the Labour government. However, it’s essential that the trial supports and informs a breakfast model which will be fully funded with new money, including set-up, staffing, and ongoing costs.
The breakfast must be healthy, nutritious, and accessible to all children in every school, with flexibility to suit the needs of every school setting.
